PHOTOS: Funeral Mass for Father Clarence Wiederholt

Benedictine Abbot Benedict Neenan of Conception Abbey in Conception offers the Mass of Christian Burial for Father Clarence Wiederholt, a retired priest of the Jefferson City diocese, on Nov. 11, 2023, in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at Conception Abbey, where Fr. Wiederholt was baptized shortly after his birth in 1930. Several priests of the Jefferson City diocese and of the Kansas City-St. Joseph diocese and several Benedictine priests of the abbey concelebrated. Father Mark Porterfield, a priest of the Jefferson City diocese who was baptized by Fr. Wiederholt, preached the homily. Fr. Wiederholt, 93, who was born near Conception in northwestern Missouri and grew up in nearby Maryville, died on Oct. 27. He was the last of the priests who were serving in the 38 counties that now make up the Jefferson City diocese at the time the diocese was founded in July 1956. He served as a U.S. Air Force chaplain before returning to the diocese to serve as a pastor in local parishes. He lived in Jefferson City through most of retirement before moving the infirmary at Conception Abbey earlier this year. In keeping with his wishes, he was buried in his family burial plot in the parish cemetery on the grounds of the abbey. (50 photos)
